First run

At the end of the install, bromigOS asks a few questions in the terminal: your monitors, the theme, where VECTOR’s thinking runs, and so on. Most questions have a sensible answer already chosen, so you can press Enter. The Homelab question starts on Skip. To look for your homelab’s machines, choose Find my lab. It runs after the questions, and asks before it reads anything (Find my lab). If you have a settings file for your homelab, choose Use a homelab.toml, then press Tab to type its path. You can change any answer later.

If you installed from the bromigOS USB stick, the questions were answered for you (the Wick theme, with VECTOR’s brain, voice and creation tools off), and your first login opens the welcome tour instead.

The welcome tour

A full-screen walk through the things worth setting first. Every step has Skip, and nothing changes until you press Continue on it:

  1. Wi-Fi, only when you’re not connected: pick a network and type its password.
  2. Your screens: which one is the main screen. Arrange and sizes… opens Settings › Displays.
  3. A world: the themes as pictures. Click one and Continue puts it on.
  4. VECTOR: where his brain runs (not yet, a local Ollama on this computer, or a service you name) and his voice (off, Kokoro on the processor, or the designed voice on the graphics card). A voice downloads its model once, in a window that shows how far it’s got.
  5. Your homelab, if you have one: Find… looks for it and asks before it reads anything, or Choose… a homelab.toml you already have.
  6. The keys: Super+Space, Super+Enter, Super+, and a few more. Press one and its card lights up.
  7. Done: what you chose.

Each step runs the same bromigos setup section you could run yourself, so the tour and bromigos setup never disagree. To take the tour again, open Settings › About › Welcome tour, or run bromigos welcome.

The first time you log in, a notification offers ready-made layouts for your panels: Minimal, Developer, Homelab and more, each fitted to your screen and your theme. They’re in Customize, on the Widgets tab (Layouts).

The questions

QuestionWhat you choose
MonitorsWhich monitor is your main one, their order from left to right, and their scale and refresh rate. Monitors you plug in later work on their own.
The AURWhether to keep an AUR helper, paru, so you can install apps from the AUR and update them with everything else.
HardwareWhether to set up what your hardware needs, such as the graphics driver. See Hardware.
MotionHow much the desktop moves: full, reduced or still. See Accessibility.
ContrastNormal or high contrast.
ThemeThe look of the whole desktop. The Wick is the default. See Themes and worlds.
VECTOR’s brainThe AI model VECTOR thinks with: a local Ollama, another server, or none for now.
VECTOR’s voiceWhether VECTOR speaks, and whether his voice runs on your graphics card or the processor. Setting up a voice downloads it, which takes a few minutes.
HomelabFind my lab, a settings file that lists your homelab’s services, or Skip. Later, bromigos setup homelab finds them for you.
Where AI runsWhether AI work runs on your homelab, this machine, or the paid cloud, in which order. See Creating with AI.
CreationThe tools that make images, cutouts, 3D models and video loops.
PeripheralsOnly asked when a supported device is connected, such as a Razer keyboard. See Keyboards and peripherals.

The cloud costs money. The suggested order for AI work leaves the paid cloud out, unless this machine has nothing else that can do the work. Check the order on the review page before you press Enter.

Change an answer later

To ask one question again, run bromigos setup with the section’s name. Your other answers stay as they are. For example, to change VECTOR’s voice:

bromigos setup voice

The sections are monitors, aur, hardware, accessibility, theme, vector, voice, homelab, targets, create and peripherals. Run bromigos setup on its own to answer them all again.

You can also open the menu with Super+Space and choose SETUP. Each question is an item there. Most answers are in Settings too.

Set up many machines the same way

To install without questions, write the answers in a file and pass it to setup:

bromigos setup --answers answers.toml

Or give answers as options, such as bromigos setup --theme mire --voice off. The file’s format is in the developer docs, docs/install.md, and bromigos setup --help lists every option.

Where your answers go

Most answers are saved as your own settings, in ~/.config/bromigos/ and in your ~/.config/hypr/hyprland.lua. The theme you pick is kept in ~/.local/state/bromigos/theme/. See Files and folders.
